It's expected that by 2030, there will be well over 100 million electric vehicles on the roads. For companies that sell gas, that might seem like bad news, and Shell, the country's biggest gas station chain, is closing 1,000 locations because of it, but they don't see it as bad news at all and are actually fully embracing the transition to electric.

Even though by the end of the year, Shell will have 1,000 fewer gas stations, before the end of 2025, they expect to open 70,000 public charging stations, and plan to have about 200,000 by 2030. In their latest Energy Transition Strategy report, Shell stated, "We are upgrading our retail network, with expanded electric vehicle charging and convenience offers, in response to changing customer needs. We believe growth in oil demand is set to slow in the second half of this decade and could start falling in the 2030s because of increasing vehicle efficiency and growth in electric vehicles."

To facilitate their plans, Shell USA acquired charging company Volta, and already have a few thousand charging points in over 30 states.

As for which 1,000 of the company's whopping 13,400 stations will be closing, that has not yet been announced, but the shuttering began last year and will continue over the months to come.
